As the leaves turn and the mornings get crisp, fall is the perfect time to get your home ready for colder weather. You’ve probably got gutters, the furnace, and the yard on your list. Your windows deserve a spot too. They’re one of the biggest factors in how comfortable your home feels and how hard your heating system has to work all winter.
Here’s a quick window checklist to run through this fall.
1. Check for drafts.
Hold a lit candle or your hand near the edges of each window on a breezy day. If the flame flickers or you feel moving air, you’ve found a leak. Drafts are one of the most common (and most fixable) sources of wasted energy.
2. Inspect the seals and caulk.
Look for cracked, peeling, or missing caulk around the frames, inside and out. Fresh caulk and weatherstripping are inexpensive fixes that make a real difference.
3. Look for condensation between the panes.
Fog or moisture trapped between the glass layers usually means the seal has failed and the window is no longer insulating the way it should. It’s a good sign that it’s time to talk to a professional.
4. Test every window.
Open, close, and lock each one. Windows that stick, rattle, or won’t latch securely lose heat and can be a security concern, too.
5. Clean the glass and tracks.
Wipe down the glass, frames, and sliding tracks to clear out dust and debris. Cleaner windows also let in more of that low autumn sunlight, which is free warmth.
6. Check for moisture damage.
Soft spots, discoloration, or warping around the frame can point to water getting in. Catching it before winter keeps a small problem from becoming an expensive one.
7. Swap screens for storm panels (if you have them) and adjust your window coverings.
Open curtains on sunny days to let the heat in and close them at night to hold it there.
When it’s time for an upgrade
If your windows are drafty, hard to operate, or showing seal failure, no amount of caulk will fully fix it. Energy-efficient replacement windows can help keep your home more comfortable, cut down on outside noise, and reduce strain on your heating system season after season.
